5 Questions to ask your Wedding Photographer | Colorado Weddings

What you need to know before booking your Wedding Photographer

When interviewing potential wedding photographers, it can be dismaying to know what questions you should be asking. It’s not like we hire professional wedding photographers every day. Here are 5 important questions to help you find your perfect photographer for your wedding day.

1. Is Weddings your Specialty?

Say your colleague at work recommends their family photographer to you. Their portfolio is stunning and they have a great personality. Sounds perfect right? Maybe so and maybe not. I would ask first what their studio specializes in and how many weddings do they shoot per year. A little bit of research like looking over the photographers website or reviews can go a long way, and most likely will reassure you that they are experienced in wedding photography. If they do multiple services like family, headshots, seniors, wedding, this question would be on the top of my list.

2. What style do you specialize in?

I know, the main reason you’re talking with the photographer in the first place is because you love their images. I would still dig into what style they specialize in. Do they pride them selves in their formal and staging ability, or journalistic style with their candid eye. For me, I love to document special moments and turn them into memories with my own artistic fashion. For more about me and my style, check out my About page on my website.

3. How do you handle timeline management on the wedding day?

I feel this is important. There is so much more than taking epic pictures when it comes to a wedding photographer. One thing I’ve learned is you can’t fully trust a day-of-timeline at a wedding. So many moving parts with many people, it’s hard to be perfect. This is one reason why I love weddings. As a professional, I always have to be ready for ANYTHING, and do my homework and preparation. I pride myself to the adapting of the last minute changes up on a wedding day. Weather delay, groomsmen running late, forgot the rings at the hotel, etc. It is very important as a professional photographer to stay calm and create the best images with what situation is in front of them. I think asking this question to your potential photographer on the spot will be very valuable.

4. What is your process for editing and delivering photos?

I feel hearing and seeing the process can be beneficial for you as a potential client. On a wedding photographers website, you may see all of their best epic images, so asking to see a full wedding gallery from a past client is a reflection of what you will receive months to come. How easy is it to share with my loved ones? Can my Mom and I order prints through the gallery? Do we have access to downloading images? How long is the gallery active?

Every questions you ask your potential photographer has a high value and is worth it. This is a luxury investment that will only gain value as time passes.

5. How do you secure and backup our wedding photos?

Your wedding day is a priceless occasion that will not allow a second take. Good equipment and good backups are a must. I personally invested a lot of money on my backup system. I use two cameras on a wedding day, have a backup camera if needed, all cameras have duel memory slots (you never know if a card will fail. A backup memory slot is a must on a wedding day!). The first thing I do after a wedding is backup the images to multiple drives and a cloud source. I feel this is a simple question that you can ask, that will ensure you and your partner a good night sleep.
